AI Stirs Controversy at Crunchyroll Japan Expo 2024
One of the most significant events of this edition was the controversy surrounding Crunchyroll’s use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for anime translations. The streaming platform had initially planned to premiere the first episode of Re:Zero season 3 with AI-generated subtitles. However, following a wave of protests from fans and French dubbing professionals, Crunchyroll ultimately canceled the screening.
The #TouchePasMaVF movement, launched a few months earlier to denounce the increasing use of AI in dubbing, gained momentum with this incident. Many fans and professionals fear that AI will eventually replace human translators and voice actors, jeopardizing their jobs and the quality of productions. Crunchyroll found itself in the midst of a media storm, forced to disable comments on its website due to the influx of criticism.
Promising Announcements for Anime Fans Japan Expo 2024
Despite the controversy, Crunchyroll bounced back by announcing several new releases that delighted anime fans. Two new series will receive a French dubbed version: Bocchi the Rock, the Konosuba spin-off, and above all, the season 1 of Re:Zero in Director’s Cut version, with its extended 51-minute episodes and a brand new cast of voice actors!
The streaming platform also unveiled a packed schedule for 2025 with numerous DVD and Blu-ray releases, including a collector’s edition for Chainsaw Man. Fans can also look forward to the theatrical release of Bocchi the Rock recap movies.
