The manga industry is one of the most active and dynamic in the entertainment sector. It is constantly seeking new proposals and nurturing those that have managed to build a solid fan base. Following the market’s evolution closely is, therefore, truly interesting. That’s why today, we bring you the best-selling mangas in 2024 after six months of activity in the new fiscal year. And yes, “Jujutsu Kaisen” has reason to celebrate.

It was @RoukHein who shared the sales data from the firm Oricon up to May 5, 2024, and these reveal the following:

First of all, indeed, “Jujutsu Kaisen” is currently the best-selling manga of the year. It has so far accumulated a total of 4,530,814 manga sales. However, the reality is that it has a very narrow margin over its pursuers.

The manga sales podium is completed by two huge successes of the anime industry in recent months: “Frieren” and “The Apothecary Diaries.” The former has 4,215,036 manga sales, while the latter has 3,716,068 units.

Furthermore, the rest of the sales to cover the 20 best-selling mangas so far this year are as follows:

  1. One Piece: 2,160,000 manga sales.
  2. Blue Lock: 1,878,019 manga sales.
  3. Haikyuu!!: 1,675,000 manga sales.
  4. Spy x Family: 1,575,000 manga sales.
  5. Kingdom: 1,320,000 manga sales.
  6. My Hero Academia: 1,190,000 manga sales.
  7. Mashle: 1,180,000 manga sales.
  8. Oshi no Ko: 1,160,000 manga sales.
  9. Kaiju No. 8: 1,055,000 manga sales.
  10. Dungeon Meshi: 1,045,000 manga sales.
  11. Chainsaw Man: 890,000 manga sales.
  12. Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken: 750,000 manga sales.
  13. Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun: 720,000 manga sales.
  14. Chiikawa Nanka Chiisakute Kawaii Yatsu: 670,000 manga sales.
  15. Blue Box: 660,000 manga sales.
  16. Detective Conan: 635,000 manga sales.
  17. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: 620,000 manga sales.

And in case there is any doubt: the Oricon firm resets the sales lists at the end of the year, which takes place in late November. In other words, these figures correspond to what would be a full first half-year of manga sales in Japan.

With such a narrow margin between the three best-selling mangas, the battle for glory could end in any way. And there are several things to consider: first, that “Jujutsu Kaisen” is in its final arc, something that can always boost sales. Second, that “Frieren” is currently on hiatus, which could eventually slow down its sales pace. And third, that like “Frieren,” “The Apothecary Diaries” is also in a small temporary hiatus (although it returns in the summer). On paper, “Jujutsu Kaisen” seems to have it good, but we’ll have to wait and see.
