Einar and Thorfinn rush to Sverkel’s house. Arnheid reveals that she helped Gardar to escape. They fled to Sverkel’s house, where she treated his wounds and hid him inside the house. Snake and two of his men keep a close eye, thinking that Gardar has escaped and hidden somewhere. Arnheid confesses that she dreamed of a life where she and Gardar could be a family again. Einar and Thorfinn offer to help them escape.
Sverkel tells Snake that becoming a slave is bad luck. He tells him to put away his sword and that he can go back to his farm. He argues that this would be a good opportunity for Snake to get his life back in order, but Snake rejects the idea. One of the men spots someone hiding behind a tree, thinking it is Gardar. Snake and his men prepare to pursue the man, who is actually Einar. Meanwhile, Thorfinn loads Gardar into Sverkel’s horse and cart, with Sverkel’s consent.
Snake notices that the man is running too fast and decides to return to Sverkel’s house. He sees Thorfinn and tells him that he will not negotiate and that he will kill him if he does not hand over Gardar. Thorfinn imagines Askeladd asking him if he will fight or remain a pacifist. He then prepares a position that makes Snake wary.
